Has Iraq Turned a Corner?
I follow Iraq The Model pretty closely, and given Mohammed and Omar's track record at being brutally honest about how things are going in Bagdad and surrounding areas, I'd say their posts in the days since Zarqawi's death speak volumes about the change in momentum that has just occurred. I wouldn't say a reversal of momentum by any means; as I've always considered there to be consistent movement towards a free and peaceful Iraq, but I'd say there has been a quickening of momentum for the Coalition and the Iraqi government's causes.

No.
I fail to see how it follows from this memo that Iraq is not progressing nicely. I mean, it's not all roses, but it's certainly no Somalia. Besides, take a look at the 23rd, and last point in it which contains a disclaimer to the effect that: the objectivity of the staff who are giving the reports cannot be guaranteed.
-harassment over proper dress and habits has been increasingly pervasive (since May)
-two of the three female employees in the American embassy report increased harassment since Mid-may
-one female is now wearing the full traditional garment after she was directly threatened, in May
These are just the first 3 points, all reporting worsening conditions in the last month.
Sure, it's only a month, and it's only one report, but I don't think it should be taken lightly; we're hearing it from the horse's mouth.
Ultimately, there's enough conflicting information coming from Iraq that we can form our own opposing opinions, and everyone will weigh out their own indicators; I suppose only time will tell.
yeah, but I guess some of the human rights that we take for granted here will take a while to be regarded the same way in other countries. Seriously compare these current conditions with the state of fear ALL citizens experienced during the reign of Saddam.
Point taken. Saddam is gone, and everyone is better off for that, I'm certain the majority of Iraq agrees. Hopefully things can progress from the current situation, rather than descending into a civil war.
