Global Warming: Cause of EVERYTHING!!!
Ok, this is starting to get just a tad silly. Apparently, global warming is now responsible for the increased size of glaciers! First, it caused polar ice cap shrinkage. Then it caused hurricanes, typhoons, tornados, a bunch of terrible hollywood flicks, and most horrendously, Al Gore!! But this, this is too much.

It often surprises me how you make out environmentalists to be like that of the population of Springfield in a town meeting. I have friends in Russia trying to build a mine, and having problems because the ice road just doesn't form like it used to. There's no question that the world is getting warmer, how do you account for it?You've taken ethanol fuel, something often advocated for by environmentalists, and used the argument against them. Of course we all would love to use something that burns cleaner, but I can't help but wonder why we don't already have E85 everywhere.
I'm no conspiracy theorist, but movies like "Who killed the electric car" at the very least point out very suspicious behaviour on the parts of oil companies and car manufacturers.
Actually, you're right. I should have labelled that post "Humans: Cause of EVERYTHING BAD!!!" Because that's so often what the environmentalism movement boils down to. Scientists generally agree that the earth has been warming for a while, but they disagree wildly on whether or not that's bad, first of all, and secondly whether that's the fault of human activity. I'm just as guilty of picking 'experts' to back up my arguments as anyone else, but goodness, so are most environmentalists!
But still, you have to find some humour in the often contradictory messages they send out, don't you? I mean, how can global WARMING be the cause of larger glaciers, which generally need COLDER weather to grow?
There are certain environmentalists like Wendell Berry whom I have always respected, and consider trustworthy resources. I think Wendell Berry has some important words on the religious background of our lack of concern for the environment. But I will definitely agree that by the time the press grabs hold of it and takes it out of context, I often cringe at the seemingly environmentally-friendly messages they botch.
I'm always very busy at Christmas, but I really do hope to find time for drinks & political debate this Christmas. You'll be interested to know that moving closer to the Left side of Canada has driven me more toward the center, or even further. I find socialists as repulsive as the mega-church-conservatives, and this is based on my own experience with Cubans.
Lastly, David Hutcheon, the Conservative candidate for our by-election, *just* knocked at my door. He asked Cristine who she'd be voting for, and then why she'd be voting NDP (I then ran to the door when I realized who it was). Cristine said it was because A) she was a nurse; it's in her best interests, and B) she cares about the environment.
He spent ten minutes going over the various environmental and social issues he has delivered on in the past (and I don't doubt that he has). It's amazing how left-leaning the Conservatives have to be in Toronto (he even mentioned that he gets called a "red Conservative.") When I grilled him about Stephen Harper's environmental record, he kept falling back on John Tory: he supports the Kyoto protocol, etc.

seriously though, these aren't the kind of things that can be discussed in white or black, at least not without crossing the line from informed unbiased opinion to personal tirade.
